About the Role:

We are looking for a Director of Engineering to lead and scale one of our critical engineering organizations. This role focuses on building world-class developer experiences, driving technical excellence across multiple teams, and shaping the future of web development infrastructure.

You will oversee strategic initiatives spanning platform engineering, developer tooling, and product development. Your leadership will guide multiple engineering teams building foundational pieces of the modern web stack that impact millions of developers worldwide.

If you’re based within a pre-determined commuting distance of one of our offices (SF, NY, London, or Berlin), the role includes in-office anchor days on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. What You Will Do:

  • Lead and manage multiple engineering teams (15-30+ engineers), fostering an inclusive culture of technical excellence, innovation, and collaboration
  • Drive technical strategy and execution across your organization’s roadmap—from platform infrastructure to developer-facing APIs and tools
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including Product, Design, DevRel, and Sales to ensure engineering efforts align with business objectives and developer needs
  • Scale engineering organizations through hiring, mentoring, and developing senior engineering managers and individual contributors
  • Balance product delivery with long-term platform investments, technical debt management, and system reliability
  • Collaborate with open-source communities, industry partners, and internal stakeholders to inform technical decisions and roadmap priorities
  • Advocate for exceptional developer experience across the entire Vercel platform and ecosystem
  • Define and implement engineering best practices, processes, and standards across your organization
  • Work closely with other engineering directors to ensure cohesive architecture and seamless product integration

About You:

  • 8+ years of engineering experience with 4+ years in engineering leadership roles, including managing managers
  • Proven track record of scaling high-performing engineering organizations in fast-paced, high-growth environments
  • Strong technical background in distributed systems, developer platforms, or web infrastructure
  • Experience delivering complex technical products that serve large developer communities or enterprise customers
  • Skilled at building inclusive, collaborative engineering cultures that attract and retain top talent
  • Deep understanding of modern web development, cloud infrastructure, and developer tooling ecosystems
  • Comfortable managing ambiguity, defining strategy, and influencing company-wide technical decisions
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to present technical concepts to both engineering and business audiences
  • Experience working in hybrid or fully distributed engineering organizations

  • Have led engineering organizations at developer-focused companies (platforms, tools, infrastructure)
  • Have experience with open-source community engagement and ecosystem development
  • Have worked on products serving millions of developers or high-scale web applications
  • Have experience with modern web frameworks (React, Next.js, etc.) and JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystems
  • Have led technical initiatives involving AI/ML integration or edge computing
  • Have experience with performance optimization at scale and developer experience research
  • Have worked in venture-backed startups through high-growth phases
